Mallard Primary School recognises the effect that an inclusive teaching style can have on a pupils’ progress, both inside and outside of the school environment. Doncaster is a vibrant and unique community in a region of wide diversity of religion and belief. The population of Yorkshire and Humberside includes large communities of Christians, Hindus, Muslims, Jewish people, Buddhists and Sikhs. Many children come from families that hold non-religious life stances such as Humanism. RE teaching and learning at Mallard Primary School enables all learners to share their experiences and to learn from one another and the religions and beliefs in our community. At our school, we provide a broad and balanced curriculum, which encompasses spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, in accordance with the locally-agreed syllabus of the Doncaster Local Authority.
Within Key Stage 1 and 2, the RE curriculum at Mallard Primary School is designed to enable the exploration of and enquiry into four key questions a year from the Doncaster SACRE: with four nine-week long themes a year and one question in each theme. The Reception curriculum enables the children to focus on two key questions during each theme, therefore covering eight key questions over the year (six from the Doncaster SACRE and two from Discovery RE focusing on religious events).
The RE curriculum at Mallard Primary School contributes to children and young people’s education by engaging children in systematic enquiry and provoking challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. To improve understanding of the key questions, knowledge and concepts, several methods of teaching and learning are deployed including storytelling, debating, dramatic performance, discussion and enquiry. Our curriculum has opportunities for all pupils to explore their own beliefs, values and traditions, and those of others, in engaging ways so that all pupils understand all elements of RE, as per the locally-agreed syllabus of the Doncaster SACRE. At Mallard Primary School, we aim to support children to develop positive attitudes of respect towards people from all religions and worldviews. Opportunities to visit places of worship are built into our curriculum to further deepen children’s understandings of religion and belief within their own community. Our curriculum aims to provide children with rich opportunities to gain and deploy the skills needed to understand, interpret and evaluate texts, sources of wisdom and authority and other evidence, so that they can learn to articulate clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences while respecting the right of others to differ. The RE curriculum at Mallard Primary School prepares our children and young people for active citizenship in a diverse and rapidly changing world, exploring aspects of British Values in relation to religions and worldviews.
