Maths is a crucial aspect of learning that enables our children to understand the world around them. Here at Mallard, we believe in a practical and investigative approach to learning where children learn to apply their new mathematical skills to real life situations.

We follow the National Curriculum for Mathematics using the structure of ‘Abacus Maths’.   In addition to this, we also use 'BIg Maths' daily to help develop Mental Strategies to improve children’s understanding of number and speed when calculating.  We are currently developing our whole school calculation policy and this will be available to parents shortly.   The children are encouraged to develop a range of strategies to help them solve problems. They are gradually introduced to formal methods for written calculations in number from year 3 and we have agreed methods for written calculations.
